The fig tree parable occurs immediately after Jesus has described certain end-time events in Matthew 24. He speaks of an era clouded with deception and false messiahs, “take heed that no one deceives you,” and “many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” Jesus refers to wars and rumours of war, nation rising against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. We read of famines, pestilences and earthquakes. Jesus describes these highly distressing events as being like the beginning of sorrows in a pregnant woman.[1] They so intensify as to eventually develop into the first four seal judgements of Revelation 6 – the white horse of false peace, the red horse of war, the black horse of famine, and the pale (or green) horse of widespread death.
