One of the major prophetic events in our modern calendar, and one to which we shall return, is the establishment of the State of Israel in May 1948. The land we know as Israel suffered 400 years under Turkish occupation. In 1917, the British army defeated the Ottoman Empire. The League of Nations then authorised the setting up of the British Mandate for Palestine (1920-1948). Winston Churchill, Colonial Secretary, gave the Arabs 77% of the territory in 1922 in an attempt to improve Arab-Jewish relations. This became Transjordan, consisting of the entire land east of the Jordan River. Later, the government of Clement Atlee (1945-1951) had a disastrous relationship with Jewish independence groups. The matter was handed over to the United Nations, the members of which voted on 29 November 1947 to divide the remaining 23% of British Mandate Palestine into Arab and Jewish states. The Arab leaders rejected the result, and five Arab armies attacked the new State of Israel when it came into being on 14 May 1948.
In February 1947, a mere nine months prior to that pivotal U.N. resolution, a Bedouin shepherd boy searching for a lost sheep near the Dead Sea threw a stone up into a cave above him ...
