You may have heard of compassion fatigue. This may not be a strictly accurate term for when we feel that so much is going on in the world worthy of our concern and prayers that we feel benumbed with less ability to empathise and intercede. The longer we must wait, the more susceptible we are to End Times fatigue! We only need to turn to the parable of the 10 virgins to see how both the wise and foolish fell asleep as they waited for the Bridegroom to arrive.[1] We are warned elsewhere in Scripture about the delay, “if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk, the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware.”[2] It is good for us to study how long the wait for the Second Coming potentially may be, so that we do not waste the intervening time available for service by abusing our fellow believers, and being self-indulgent and intoxicated with this world. None of us wants to be found sleeping, or, to use a swimming analogy, spiritually treading water. We must continue to be about our Father’s business right to the end.[3]
We can only speculate as to the reasons for this delay...
